In the picturesque village of Beni Ammar Zerhoun, in the heart of the mountains of Morocco, a very unique tradition continues: the Donkey Festival. An emblematic celebration, the Festibaz is a vibrant tribute to these faithful four-legged companions, undeniable symbols of the village soul and local authenticity.
During the 13th edition of this memorable event, the donkeys of Beni Ammar Zerhoun were pampered and honored by the inhabitants of the village. An exquisite blend of beauty and performance enlivened the day, offering participants a true immersion into Moroccan rural life.
The highlight of the festival was undoubtedly the donkey beauty contest, where seven distinguished candidates competed to win the coveted title. Under the watchful eyes of a demanding jury, the owners presented their protégés in a colorful parade, highlighting their elegance and presence. It was ultimately “Shah Rukh Khan”, adorned with a sumptuous headband of flowers, who won the prize, seducing both with his grace and his exemplary behavior towards humans.
Beyond the simple competition, the Beni Ammar Zerhoun Donkey Festival embodies a deep respect for these animals essential to the daily life of the village. Indeed, in this mountainous setting, donkeys are the privileged partners of the inhabitants, ensuring the transport of goods and facilitating travel in areas that are difficult to access. A close and symbiotic relationship thus unites man and donkey, making the latter a true pillar of the local economy.
In addition to the traditional festivities, the village took the opportunity of this gathering to promote animal welfare. An awareness and care campaign was set up by the Society for the Protection of Animals and Nature, making it possible to check the health and well-being of the participating donkeys. A laudable initiative that demonstrates the community’s commitment to respecting its fellow workers.
At the end of this emotion-rich event, a one-kilometer race pitted twelve donkey-rider pairs against each other, to the great pleasure of the spectators. At the end of a fierce competition, it was Said Hayani, a young 19-year-old villager, who won, making the proud eyes of his community shine.
Thus, the Beni Ammar Zerhoun Donkey Festival has established itself as an unmissable event, combining tradition, culture and commitment to animal welfare. A unique celebration of its kind, where the donkey, symbol of modesty and usefulness, finds its place of choice at the heart of village life, in a surge of respect and admiration.
